About Character Counter
Character counts matter wherever a field refuses to accept your text: post boxes, meta description fields, form validators, headline slots and SMS bodies. This tool counts as you type and splits the total into letters, digits, spaces, line breaks and symbols, so you can see exactly what is pushing you over a limit rather than guessing which word to cut.
The two progress bars show the practical limits. X allows 280 characters for a standard post, and a single GSM-7 SMS segment carries 160 characters — anything beyond that is billed as an additional segment, so 161 characters already costs two. Non-GSM characters such as emoji or certain punctuation switch a message to UCS-2 encoding, which caps a segment at 70 characters.
