About Markdown Preview

Markdown was created by John Gruber in 2004 as a way to write formatted text that stays readable as plain text. This editor renders it live through the marked library, so every keystroke updates the pane on the right: headings become real heading elements, asterisks become bold or italic, backtick fences become syntax-neutral code blocks, greater-than signs become blockquotes, pipes become tables, and dashes become horizontal rules.

Use it to check that a README, changelog, forum post or documentation page will render the way you intend before you publish it — particularly tables and nested lists, where a single missing pipe or space silently breaks the layout. The copy-HTML button gives you the finished markup ready to paste into a CMS or an email. The preview is rendered as inert HTML and any script tags in the source are not executed, so it is safe to paste untrusted content in.
