About Percentage Calculator
Percentage problems come in three shapes and most mistakes come from mixing them up, so this page keeps them separate and shows the arithmetic underneath each answer. Mode one takes a percentage of a number (15% of 240 = 36). Mode two asks what share one number is of another (45 is 25% of 180). Mode three measures the change between two numbers and tells you whether it went up or down.
Mode three is the one people get backwards: the change is divided by the original value, not the new one, so going from 80 to 112 is a 40% increase while going back down from 112 to 80 is a 28.57% decrease — the two are not symmetric, and that is correct. Results are rounded for display but the exact figure is in the formula line. For money-related percentages, the discount and GST calculators handle the tax split for you.
